Total Refrigeration wins battle of the elements

Tree loving staff from the leading UK ice cream freezer company thought they were used to working with a chill in the air, but nothing could have prepared them for their team bonding tree planting.

Hyde-based Total Refrigeration staff braved the icy conditions of the frozen north to plant 300 trees at St Benedicts Wood in St Helens, Merseyside.  Marketing Manager Stuart Grimshaw got off to a ground breaking start when he attacked the frozen soil with gusto only to crack his spade in half.

Not to be defeated, Stuart battled with the elements alongside Managing Director Dave Parkes and eight other Total Refrigeration staff to support the Woodland Trust’s “plant a tree” initiative. So far, the company has financed the planting of over 7,400 trees for the trust.

Total Refrigeration plants a tree for every refrigeration unit it collects and recycles. Wherever possible hydrocarbon refrigerants are used in their ice cream freezers rather than ozone-depleting CFCs. The company now recycles 97% of each unit that it disposes of.

Stuart says: “This is the second year we have planted trees at St Benedicts Wood so it was great to see the fruits of our labour.  Despite an influx of hungry hares and rabbits who took a liking to last year’s trees, half of those saplings have survived.

“Total Refrigeration is fully committed to the Woodland Trust’s vital work in preserving our countryside and will continue to support the tree planting programme.  We will also be looking at other initiatives, such as ground clearing.

Katherine Jaiteh, a corporate fundraiser at the Woodland Trust says: “Companies need to seriously look at reducing their carbon footprint and give something back to the environment.  We’re especially grateful to Total Refrigeration staff for toiling all morning in freezing conditions to plant these trees.  Let’s just hope the hungry hares and rabbits spare our saplings.”

Since its inception in 1972, the Woodland Trust has overseen the planting of more than eight million native trees and cares for more than 1,000 woodland sites covering more than 20,000 hectares.
